THE MICAST2-12 SAMPLE WAS GROWN AT 40 S-1 AT APPROXIMATELY 32 K CM-1 THERMAL GRADIENT. X-RAY RADIOGRAPHY OF THE SAMPLE/ CRUCIBLE/SCA ASSEMBLY AT NASA-MSFC INDICATED THE POSSIBILITY THAT THIS SAMPLE HAD SURFACE POROSITIES WHICH MAY BE THERE BECAUSE OF MELT-CRUCIBLE REACTION OR DUE TO DETACHMENT OF MELT FROM THE CRUCIBLE INNER WALL. THIS UNEXPECTED OBSERVATION FORCED THE SAMPLE CHARACTERIZATION AT CLEVELAND STATE UNIVERSITY TO SLOW DOWN IN ORDER TO CAREFULLY CATALOGUE THE EXACT LOCATIONS OF SUCH FAULTS IN THREE DIMENSIONAL SPACE, BEFORE MAKING ANY TRANSVERSE CUTS OF THE MICAST2-12. WE PROPOSE TO EXPLORE AN INNOVATIVE AND LOW COST APPROACH TO MONITOR HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOMS (HABS) AND RELATED WATER QUALITY SCIENTIFIC ISSUES IN AQUATIC SYSTEMS. WE WILL ENGAGE VOLUNTEER PRIVATE PILOTS ACTING AS CITIZEN SCIENTISTS AT NO COST TO NASA WHO WILL FLY OVER POTENTIALLY IMPACTED WATERWAYS, WHILES TAKING HIGH QUALITY AERIAL RGB AND NIR PHOTOGRAPHS WITH RUGGED, COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE CAMERAS. THE DATA WILL BE PROVIDED TO ACADEMIC PARTNERS AT CLEVELAND STATE AND KENT STATE UNIVERSITIES WHO WILL PERFORM ACCURATE GEO REFERENCING,ATMOSPHERIC CORRECTION AND FURTHER IMAGE ANALYSIS. WE CONDUCTED A SUCCESSFUL PILOT STUDY OF THE PROJECT LAST SUMMER AS PART OF THE 2014 INTERAGENCY HAB CAMPAIGN ON THE WESTERN BASIN OF LAKE ERIE. DENDRITES (PINE TREE-LIKE STRUCTURES) INEVITABLY FIRST FORM AND GROW DURING THE INITIAL COOLING AND SOLIDIFICATION OF METAL ALLOY CASTINGS. DISTRIBUTION OF THESE DENDRITES DETERMINES MATERIAL PROPERTIES SUCH AS STRENGTH AND DUCTILITY. THE DISTRIBUTION, SIZE, AND MORPHOLOGY OF THE DENDRITIC NETWORK DEPEND ON THE ALLOY COMPOSITION AND THE RATE OF HEAT REMOVAL (GROWTH RATE AND TEMPERATURE GRADIENT). THE RESULTING MICROSTRUCTURE IS THEN RELATED TO THE PROCESSING CONDITIONS WHICH DETERMINE THE PROPERTIES. CONSEQUENTLY, IN ORDER TO OPTIMIZE THE MICROSTRUCTURE THE PROCESSING CONDITIONS SHOULD BE WELL KNOWN.MICROSTRUCTURAL CHARACTERIZATION OF METAL ALLOYS IS OFTEN ACCOMPLISHED BY CONDUCTION CONTROLLED DIRECTIONAL SOLIDIFICATION EXPERIMENTS. HERE TWO PROCESSING PARAMETERS ARE HELD CONSTANT AND ONE IS VARIED. THE MICROSTRUCTURE OF THE METAL SAMPLES IS THEN EVALUATED IN TERMS OF ITS CHARACTERISTIC DIMENSIONS, AND THE PROCESS CONTINUES. WHEN THE DATA SET IS COMPLETE, OR NEARLY SO, PROCESSING CONDITIONS CAN BE DETERMINED TO OPTIMIZE THE PROPERTIES OF COMMERCIALLY IMPORTANT PRODUCTS SUCH AS TURBINE BLADES. MANY STUDIES HAVE BEEN MADE, AND THEORIES DEVELOPED, IN VIEW OF THE DENDRITE ARM SPACING RELATIONSHIPS THAT HAVE BEEN REPORTED. UNFORTUNATELY, ON EARTH, THERMAL AND SOLUTAL GRADIENTS DEVELOP DURING SOLIDIFICATION WHICH GIVES RISE TO THERMOSOLUTAL CONVECTION. THIS CONVECTION EFFECTIVELY DISRUPTS THE STEADY-STATE CONTROLLED GROWTH CONDITIONS AND PROMOTES ANY NUMBER OF DETRIMENTAL SEGREGATION EFFECTS IN THE CASTING. THIS SEGREGATION IMPACTS THE DESIRED MATERIAL PROPERTIES AND MAKES MICROSTRUCTURAL MEASUREMENTS MEANINGLESS. THE REDUCED GRAVITATIONAL ACCELERATION ABOARD THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION (ISS) EFFECTIVELY ELIMINATES THERMOSOLUTAL CONVECTION. CONSEQUENTLY, METAL ALLOY SAMPLES DIRECTIONALLY SOLIDIFIED IN THE MICROGRAVITY ENVIRONMENT ABOARD THE ISS GROW STRICTLY UNDER DIFFUSION CONTROLLED CONDITIONS WITHOUT THE COMPROMISING EFFECTS OF NATURALLY INDUCED CONVECTION.
