THESE RESPIRATORS ARE AT RISK OF RAPIDLY BECOMING OBSTRUCTED DURING FIRE SCENARIOS DUE TO FOULING OF THE HEPA MEDIA BY COMBUSTION PRODUCTS. ALTHOUGH THE PERFORMANCE OF RESPIRATORS REMAINS OTHERWISE UNAFFECTED IN THIS SCENARIO, THEY ARE RENDERED USELESS DUE TO THE INCREASED RESISTANCE TO AIR FLOW. SERIONIX PREVIOUSLY SOURCED, EVALUATED, AND RECOMMENDED A VARIETY OF MATERIALS FOR USE AS PRE?FILTERS TO PROTECT THE HEPA MEDIA FROM FOULING AS A SUBTASK OF PHASE III CONTRACT (#80JSC017P0016) ULTRAFAST ADSORPTIVE AIR FILTERS FOR NASA SPACECRAFT APPLICATIONS. FURTHERMORE, SERIONIX EXPOSED HEPA AND PRE?FILTER COMPLEXES TO CHALLENGE CONDITIONS AND MEASURED PERMEABILITY AFTER EACH CHALLENGE WAS COMPLETE. IN THE PRESENT WORK SERIONIX WILL RIGOROUSLY TEST SEVERAL PREFILTER MATERIALS ALONG WITH RESPIRATOR CARTRIDGES AGAINST A VARIETY OF CHALLENGES. SBIR PHASE II CONTRACT NNX17CJ09C FIBER-BASED ADSORBENTS TAILORED FOR PLSS AMMONIA AND FORMALDEHYDE REMOVAL TARGETS TRACE CONTAMINANT REMOVAL NEEDS IN THE EXPLORATION SPACE SUIT ENVIRONMENT. THE EXPLORATION SPACE SUIT ENVIRONMENT IS EXTREMELY SMALL IN VOLUME, AND THE SUIT IS A CLOSED ENVIRONMENT WITH NO FRESH AIR . EXTREMELY SMALL AMOUNTS OF CONTAMINATION CAN ACCUMULATE AND REACH UNSAFE LEVELS. THE SPACESUIT OPERATING ENVIRONMENT IS REDUCED PRESSURE, AND HAS ELEVATED OXYGEN CONCENTRATIONS. THE CONTAMINANTS OF GREATEST INTEREST ARE AMMONIA AND FORMALDEHYDE. GENERATION RATES ARE LOW, ACCEPTABLE LEVELS OF CONTAMINATION ARE EXTREMELY LOW. WHEN THE COMMERCIAL CREW PROGRAM VEHICLES ARE DOCKED TO THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATIONS THERE IS A RISK OF AMMONIA CONTAMINATION EVENT. THE SPACE SHUTTLE PROGRAM HAD A REQUIREMENT FOR RAPID EMERGENCY RETURN AFTER AN AMMONIA LEAK ON ISS. TODAY, THE CURRENT CCP REQUIREMENTS DO NOT HAVE THIS REQUIREMENT LEVIED ON THEM. A HIGH CAPACITY AMMONIA REMOVAL SORBENT IS AVAILABLE IN A POROUS CLOTH FORM. THIS SOW WORK WILL INCLUDE LARGE-SCALE PERFORMANCE TESTING USING THE SERIONIX AMMONIA REMOVAL DEVICE, ASSESSING THE FLIGHT CONFIGURATION PACKAGING, ASSESSING THE FLIGHT MATERIAL, AND ASSESSING THE PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE OF AN AMMONIA LEAK EVENT. SERIONIX HAS DEVELOPED PROPRIETARY ADSORPTIVE COATINGS WHICH CAN BE APPLIED TO BOTH POROUS AND NONPOROUS SUBSTRATES TO YIELD FUNCTIONAL COMPOSITE MEDIA CAPABLE OF RAPID, EFFICIENT, ADSORPTION OF TRACE AMMONIA AND FORMALDEHYDE. IN PRELIMINARY TESTING, THIS FLEXIBLE SYSTEM HAS EXHIBITED 7 TIMES HIGHER AMMONIA CAPACITY RELATIVE TO CONVENTIONAL PHOSPHORIC-IMPREGNATED ACTIVATED CARBON. THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THIS PHASE I EFFORT IS TO DESIGN AND DEMONSTRATE A LIGHTWEIGHT, HIGH PERFORMING SYSTEM FOR REMOVAL OF AMMONIA AND FORMALDEHYDE FROM NEXT GENERATION SPACECRAFT AND SPACE SUITS. SYSTEMS FOR BOTH VACUUM-SWING AND SINGLE USE ADSORPTION WILL BE EXTENSIVELY EVALUATED. SECONDARY PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS SUCH AS PRESSURE DROP, FLAMMABILITY, AND GRAVIMETRIC/VOLUMETRIC EFFICIENCY WILL BE QUANTIFIED INTERNALLY WHILE MEDIA PROTOTYPES WILL BE DELIVERED TO NASA FOR EVALUATION.
