| BEFORE ENTERING THE PRESSURE GARMENT ASSEMBLY, THE VENTILATION FLOW PASSES A PRESSURE TRANSDUCER AND THE INLET TO THE PARTIAL PRESSURE CARBON DIOXIDE (PPCO2) SENSOR. THE OUTPUTS OF THE TRANSDUCER AND THE SENSOR ARE FED TO THE EXTRAVEHICULAR MOBILITY UNIT (EMU) CAUTION AND WARNING SYSTEM (ECWS). THE FLOW THROUGH THE CO2 SENSOR IS LIMITED BY A FLOW RESTRICTOR TO LESS THAN 1% OF THE TOTAL FLOW THROUGH THE VENTILATION PASSAGES. THE REMAINDER OF THE O2 GOES TO THE SUIT VIA THE HELMET VENTILATION PAD. WITHIN THE HELMET, THE FLOW THEN PASSES DOWNWARD OVER THE VISOR TO PREVENT FOGGING, TO COOL THE HEAD, AND TO DIRECT CO2 AWAY FROM THE ORAL/NASAL AREA. THE FUNCTION OF THE PPCO2 SENSOR IS TO MEASURE AND REPORT THE CONCENTRATION OF CARBON DIOXIDE IN THE VENTILATION LOOP OF THE SHUTTLE/INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION (ISS) EMU. THE SENSOR IS INSTALLED JUST BEFORE THE SUIT VOLUME INLET AT THE HELMET. THE SENSOR DETERMINES THE CO2 CONCENTRATION IN THE VENTILATION LOOP GAS DIRECTED TOWARDS THE HELMET WHICH IS USED TO DETERMINE THE STATUS OF THE CO2 SCRUBBER. NASA NEEDS A DROP-IN REPLACEMENT FOR THE CURRENT HAMILTON SUNDSTRAND CONTRACT END ITEM (CEI) I-122, INFRA-RED CO2 (IRCO2) SENSOR USED ON THE SHUTTLE/ISS EMU. THE CURRENT EMU CO2 SENSOR IS AN INFRA-RED CO2 (IRCO2) SENSOR THAT UTILIZES A LIGHT SOURCE, THROUGH A SAPPHIRE WINDOW, SENSED MEDIA, THROUGH ANOTHER SAPPHIRE WINDOW, AND FINALLY TO THE DETECTOR. CO2 ABSORBS LIGHT ON A NARROW BAND OF WAVELENGTHS THAT ENABLE THE DETECTOR TO DETERMINE HOW MUCH CO2 IS PRESENT IN THE SENSE CELL. IF FREE WATER IS PRESENT, IT WILL OBSTRUCT THIS PROCESS. CONDENSED WATER HAS CAUSED MULTIPLE ON-ORBIT MALFUNCTIONS OF THE CURRENT SHUTTLE/ISS EMU IRCO2 SENSOR DESIGN. THE CREW AND THERMAL SYSTEMS DIVISION S SPACE SUIT SYSTEMS BRANCH REQUIRES DR. WEISLOGEL S EXPERTISE ON PERFORMING FLUID ANALYSIS FOR CAPILLARY PHASE SEPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF FLUID BEHAVIOR IN MICROGRAVITY IN SUPPORT OF THE REDESIGN EFFORT OF THE CURRENT EXTRAVEHICULAR MOBILITY UNIT (EMU) CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2) SENSOR ASSEMBLY (INCLUDES SENSOR ITSELF AND FLOW PASSAGEWAYS TO AND FROM THE SENSOR). THE INTENT OF THIS PROCUREMENT IS FOR TECHNICAL DETAILED DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION SUPPORT FOR SAID HARDWARE. THE LVPS ACCEPTS + 28 V SPACECRAFT POWER INPUT, CHARGES THE CAPACITOR BANK, AND PROVIDES LOW-VOLTAGE DC POWER TO THE LDA DRIVER CARD, THE LCU, AND AN EXTERNAL Q-SWITCH DRIVER THAT IS LOCATED INSIDE THE EXTERNAL LASER OPTICAL BOX (LOB). THE Q-SWITCH DRIVER IS A PURCHASED CIRCUIT CARD FROM FIBERTEK, INC. THE LCU IS THE COMMAND, CONTROL, AND DATA INTERFACE TO THE LDA DRIVER AND HAS SOLE CONTROL OVER THE Q-SWITCH DRIVER. DESDYNI-LIDAR INSTRUMENT COMMAND, CONTROL, AND DATA INTERFACES TO THE LEB ARE CONTAINED IN THE LCU. THE LCU SUBSYSTEM IS GOVERNMENT-FURNISHED-EQUIPMENT (GFE) TO BE MOUNTED AND CONNECTED INSIDE THE LEB. OBJECTIVES OF THE LEB DEVELOPMENT WORK, PROVIDES THE SET OF FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE LEB, DESCRIBES SPECIFIC TASKS TO BE ACCOMPLISHED IN THE HOMER-ETU BREADBOARD ELECTRONICS DEVELOPMENT EFFORT, AND SETS FORTH THE DELIVERY SCHEDULE. THE PATHFINDER DEVELOPMENT OF BREADBOARD ELECTRONICS THAT WILL SERVE AS THE POWER, COMMAND, CONTROL, AND DATA INTERFACE FOR THE HOMER-ETU LASER TRANSMITTER.
