THE MADDEN-JULIAN OSCILLATION (MJO) IS A CLIMATE FLUCTUATION FOUND IN THE EQUATORIAL REGIONS OF THE WORLD OCEANS THAT EFFECTS PRECIPITATION PATTERNS AND HAS INFLUENCES OVER MANY DIFFERENT WEATHER PHENOMENA. GENERALLY, THERE IS A 20-30 DAY PERIOD OF ENHANCED THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY, WHICH PROPAGATES EASTWARD FOLLOWED BY 20-30 DAYS OF REDUCED ACTIVITY AND CLEARER SKIES. THERE IS A STRONG LINK BETWEEN THE ATMOSPHERE AND OCEAN DURING DIFFERENT STAGES OF ITS PROPAGATION WITH WARMER WATERS GENERALLY INCREASING THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY. THIS INCREASE IN ACTIVITY COOLS THE SURFACE OCEAN, WHICH IS UNFAVORABLE FOR THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY AND CLEARER SKIES BEGIN TO DEVELOP ALLOWING FOR OCEAN TEMPERATURES TO RISE AGAIN. THE MJO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR CREATING DROUGHT AND FLOODING CONDITIONS ACROSS INDONESIA, AND IS RESPONSIBLE FOR INITIATING AND AFFECTING OTHER CLIMATE EVENTS SUCH AS EL NI O/ LA NI A AND THE INDIAN OCEAN DIPOLE. DEPENDING UPON WHICH PERIOD OF THE MJO IS OCCURRING, THE PATHS AND INTENSITIES OF CYCLONES IN MANY TROPICAL OCEANS CAN BE ALTERED BY THE EFFECTS OF THE MJO. IN THE TROPICAL OCEANS THERE ARE LARGE WAVES (KELVIN AND ROSSBY WAVES) THAT AFFECT THE STRUCTURE OF THE SURFACE OCEAN AND CHANGE HOW THE OCEAN HEATS AND COOLS AS WELL AS HOW IT INTERACTS WITH THE ATMOSPHERE. THESE WAVES ARE GENERALLY OBSERVED USING SATELLITE ALTIMETRY. THE MJO HAS BEEN SHOWN TO INITIATE THESE WAVES AS WELL AS INDIRECTLY INTERACT WITH THESE WAVES. THE AIR-SEA COUPLING OF THE MJO IS ALSO STUDIED USING SATELLITE ALTIMETRIC SEA SURFACE HEIGHT (SSH) DATA, WHICH IS AVAILABLE NOW MORE THAN 20+ YEARS WORTH OF DATA (TOPEX/POSEIDON, JASON-1 AND JASON-2 ALTIMETRY), TO UNDERSTAND THE INTERACTION OF KELVIN AND ROSSBY WAVES WITH THE MJO. SALINITY IS OFTEN NEGLECTED BUT IS AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT IN OCEAN DYNAMICS AND THERMODYNAMICS. UNDERSTANDING HOW SALINITY VARIES DURING CLIMATE VARIATIONS IS AN IMPORTANT THE MADDEN-JULIAN OSCILLATION AND ITS INTERACTION WITH OCEAN TEMPERATURE HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED AND STUDIED SINCE ITS DISCOVERY. HOWEVER, UNDERSTANDING THE IMPLICATIONS OF THE MJO ON SSS FLUCTUATIONS DURING EACH STAGE OF THE PROPAGATION IS IMPORTANT. SALINITY MAY INFLUENCE SURFACE OCEAN DYNAMICS AND WILL PROVIDE BETTER REPRESENTATION OF THE MJO IN CLIMATE MODELS IF INCLUDED. NASA LAUNCHED AQUARIUS/SAC-D SALINITY MISSION ON JUNE, 10 2011. IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO DETERMINE WHETHER AQUARIUS SALINITY MISSION, WILL BE ABLE TO RESOLVE THE MAGNITUDE OF THE VARIABILITY AND ON WHAT TEMPORAL AND SPATIAL SCALES. THE EXPECTED OUTCOME OF THIS PROJECT WILL BE THE ADVANCEMENT IN UNDERSTANDING OF THE MJO DYNAMICS AND INITIATION PROCESSES NECESSARY FOR IMPROVING MJO SIMULATION AND PREDICTION CAPABILITY THAT DELIVER CLIMATE PREDICTION AND ASSESSMENT PRODUCTS ON INTRASEASONAL TIMESCALES FOR RISK MANAGEMENT AND DECISION MAKING. THIS RESEARCH FALLS WITHIN THE NASA PHYSICAL OCEANOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE RESEARCH, WORLD CLIMATE RESEARCH PROGRAM (WCRP) OBJECTIVES; SPECIFICALLY THE WCRP SPONSORED YEAR OF TROPICAL CONVECTION/MJO TASK FORCE (YOTC/MJOTF), AND COMPLEMENTS THE FIELD CAMPAIGN OF DYNAMICS OF THE MADDEN JULIAN OSCILLATION (DYNAMO) AND COOPERATIVE INDIAN OCEAN EXPERIMENT ON INTRA SEASONAL VARIABILITY (CINDY). SUMMARY: THE CARBON DIOXIDE REDUCTION IS CONSIDERED A MAJOR SHORTCOMING FOR THE CURRENT ATMOSPHERE REVITALIZATION SYSTEM. THE STATE OF THE ART FOR SPACECRAFT OXYGEN RECOVERY IS THE CARBON DIOXIDE REDUCTION ASSEMBLY (CRA) CURRENTLY IN USE ON THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION. THE CRA EMPLOYS A SABATIER REACTOR TO RECOVER OXYGEN BY REDUCING THE METABOLIC CARBON DIOXIDE. HOWEVER, THE CRA RECOVERS LESS THAN 50% OF THE OXYGEN PRESENT IN THE CARBON DIOXIDE STREAM. NOVEL TECHNOLOGIES ARE DESIRED SO THAT THE OXYGEN RECOVERY RATE CAN BE SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED TO AT LEAST 75% OR HIGHER, THEREBY APPROACHING FULL CLOSURE OF THE ATMOSPHERE REVITALIZATION LOOP. IN THIS PROJECT, DIRECT CARBON DIOXIDE ELECTROLYSIS VIA MICROTUBULAR SOLID OXIDE CELL TECHNOLOGY IS PROPOSED TO ACHIEVE HIGH OXYGEN RECOVERY RATES. THE MAJOR RESEARCH OBJECTIVES INCLUDE: 1) IDENTIFICATION AND INNOVATION OF OXIDE FUEL ELECTRODE MATERIALS FAVORING CARBON DIOXIDE REDUCTION REACTION; 2) FABRICATION OF OXIDE FUEL ELECTRODE-SUPPORTED MICROTUBULAR CELLS WITH THIN FILM ELECTROLYTE; 3) DEVELOPMENT OF COMPOSITE OXYGEN ELECTRODE THAT HAS BOTH HIGH BULK CONDUCTIVITY AND HIGH SURFACE CATALYTIC PROPERTY; 4) FABRICATION OF NOVEL PLATINUM NANOWIRE-NETWORK CURRENT COLLECTORS; 5) ELECTROCHEMICAL PERFORMANCE AND DURABILITY TEST OF MICROTUBULAR CELLS. THE IN-HOUSE DESIGNED ORIFICE SPINNERET SYSTEM WILL BE UTILIZED TO EXTRUDE MICROTUBULAR CELLS WITH CAPABILITY OF MASS PRODUCTION. VACUUM-ASSISTED SPRAY TECHNIQUE WILL BE USED TO FABRICATE THIN FILM ELECTROLYTE. THE RECENTLY DEVELOPED LOW TEMPERATURE CO-SINTERING APPROACH WILL BE USED TO DENSIFY THIN FILM ELECTROLYTE WHILE MAINTAINING SUFFICIENT POROSITY OF OXIDE SUBSTRATE. THE ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY RELAXATION MEASUREMENT WILL BE EMPLOYED TO EXTRACT THE BULK CONDUCTIVITY AND SURFACE EXCHANGE KINETIC COEFFICIENT FOR ELECTRODE MATERIALS. THE HIGH PERFORMANCE NANOSTRUCTURED COMPOSITE ELECTRODES WILL BE FABRICATED BY INFILTRATION, COMBINING THE HIGH BULK CONDUCTING MATERIAL WITH HIGH SURFACE EXCHANGE KINETIC MATERIAL TOGETHER. THE CARBON-SUPPORTED PLATINUM NANOPARTICLES TOGETHER WITH VACUUM SPRAY WILL BE USED TO FABRICATE NANOWIRE NETWORK CURRENT COLLECTORS. THE ADVANTAGES OFFERED BY THE OXIDE FUEL ELECTRODE-SUPPORTED MICROTUBULAR CELLS WITH NANO-STRUCTURED ELECTRODE AND CURRENT COLLECTORS FOR CARBON DIOXIDE ELECTROLYSIS INCLUDE INCREASED CARBON DIOXIDE REDUCTION REACTION SITES, IMPROVED REDOX STABILITY, REDUCED OHMIC RESISTANCE LOSS AND ELECTRODE POLARIZATION RESISTANCE LOSS, IMPROVED THERMAL CYCLING STABILITY, AS WELL AS REDUCED MASS, VOLUME, AND POWER. THEREFORE THE PERFORMANCE AND DURABILITY OF SOLID OXIDE ELECTROLYSIS CELLS WILL BE SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED. THE OXYGEN RECOVERY RATES CAN BE CONTROLLED BY MERELY CHANGING THE CURRENT/VOLTAGE APPLIED ON THE MICROTUBULAR CELLS. THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL PROVIDE A HIGHLY EFFICIENT OXYGEN RECOVERY TECHNOLOGY FROM DIRECT CARBON DIOXIDE ELECTROLYSIS WITH REDUCED MASS, VOLUME AND POWER, WHICH CAN FULFILL FUTURE SPACE EXPLORATION NEEDS BEYOND LOW EARTH ORBIT. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH WILL OBTAIN SUSTAINABILITY FOR FUTURE ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL AND LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM (ECLSS) BY OPERATING SOLID OXIDE CELL IN ELECTROLYSIS MODE FOR OXYGEN RECOVERY AND FUEL CELL MODEL FOR POWER GENERATION ALTERNATIVELY, THEREFORE CLOSING THE ATMOSPHERE REVITALIZATION LOOP FOR FUTURE ECLSS. SOIL MOISTURE DERIVED USING PASSIVE MICROWAVE REMOTE SENSING IS A RELIABLE HYDROLOGICAL PRODUCT THAT IS USED IN VARIOUS ASPECTS OF HYDROLOGY, LAND-ATMOSPHERE INTERACTIONS, METEOROLOGY AND AGRICULTURAL APPLICATIONS. HOWEVER, THE SPATIAL SCALE OF THE RADIOMETER DERIVED SOIL MOISTURE IS INADEQUATE FOR THESE AND MANY OTHER SCIENTIFIC APPLICATIONS. THE FOLLOWING PROPOSAL WILL USE VEGETATION AND SURFACE TEMPERATURE DATA AT A HIGHER SPATIAL RESOLUTION IN ORDER TO DISAGGREGATE THE SOIL MOISTURE RETRIEVED USING A RADIOMETER. THIS DISAGGREGATED SOIL MOISTURE PRODUCT WILL BE AT SPATIAL RESOLUTIONS OF 1-10 KM AND HELP IN APPLICATIONS AS COMPARED TO THE 10S OF KILOMETERS (30-60KM) AS SOIL MOISTURE DERIVED FROM RADIOMETER DATA. IN OUR PROPOSAL, WE WILL USE THE THEORY OF THERMAL INERTIA AND SATELLITE SENSOR DERIVED VEGETATION AND SURFACE TEMPERATURE DATA TO DOWNSCALE PASSIVE MICROWAVE SOIL MOISTURE RETRIEVALS OVER THE CONTIGUOUS UNITED STATES. THIS PROPOSAL IS IN TWO PARTS. IN THE FIRST PART WE WILL USE EXISTING MODIS VEGETATION AND SURFACE TEMPERATURE DATA TO DOWNSCALE AMSR-E SOIL MOISTURE RETRIEVALS. THIS PROPOSAL BUILDS UPON OUR PREVIOUS NASA-SPONSORED RESEARCH WHERE WE DEVELOPED BIOPHYSICAL HEAT BUDGET MODELS TO SUCCESSFULLY PREDICT THE BODY TEMPERATURES OF MARINE ORGANISMS USING NASA REMOTE SENSING PRODUCTS AS DATA INPUTS. LIKE MOST OTHER APPROACHES TO EXPLORING THE DETERMINANTS OF CURRENT AND FUTURE SPECIES RANGE BOUNDARIES, OUR PRIOR RESEARCH FOCUSED LARGELY THE ROLE OF LETHAL LIMITS. HOWEVER, RECENT STUDIES HAVE EMPHASIZED THAT UNDERSTANDING SUBLETHAL PATTERNS OF ENVIRONMENTAL STRESSORS MAY PLAY A KEY ROLE IN UNDERSTANDING THE ECOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE. FIRST, SOME SPECIES MAY BE "CLOSE TO THE EDGE" ALONG LARGE SECTIONS OF THEIR RANGE, SUGGESTING THAT SMALL CHANGES IN TEMPERATURE MAY LEAD TO LARGE CHANGES IN DISTRIBUTION. SECOND, RECENT STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT RANGE LIMITS ARE NOT ALWAYS SET BY SHORT-DURATION, LETHAL EXPOSURES, BUT INSTEAD BY MORE CHRONIC EXPOSURES THAT LEAD TO IRREVERSIBLE PHYSIOLOGICAL DAMAGE. PREDICTING THE LIKELY ECOLOGICAL IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE DEMANDS THAT WE MOVE BEYOND THE ROLE OF LETHAL LIMITS IN SETTING SPECIES RANGE BOUNDARIES. THE USE OF NASA REMOTE SENSING PRODUCTS TO PREDICT GLOBAL PATTERNS AND CHANGES OF ANIMAL BODY TEMPERATURE, THROUGH A COMBINATION OF BIOPHYSICAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL MODELS ALLOWS AN UNPRECEDENTED OPPORTUNITY TO FORECAST CHANGES IN PHYSIOLOGICAL PERFORMANCE WITHIN THE CURRENT AND FUTURE GEOGRAPHIC RANGES OF THE MAJOR CONSTITUENTS OF COASTAL MARINE ECOSYSTEMS. OUR MODELING APPROACH IS FLEXIBLE, ALLOWING FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS IN REMOTE SENSING TECHNOLOGIES AND REGIONAL OR GLOBAL CLIMATE MODELING TO BE RAPIDLY INCORPORATED. FINALLY AND IMPORTANTLY, WE BASE OUR APPROACH ON A GENERAL MODEL OF THE EFFECTS OF BODY TEMPERATURE ON PHYSIOLOGICAL PERFORMANCE AND TOLERANCE THAT IS APPLICABLE TO VIRTUALLY ANY ORGANISM IN ANY HABITAT AND THUS WE ANTICIPATE OUR RESULTS TO HAVE WIDE APPLICATION IN DEVELOPING APPROACHES TO FORECASTING BIOLOGICAL RESPONSES TO CHANGING CLIMATE. OUR PROPOSED RESEARCH IS FOCUSED ON THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS. ALL ARE INDEPENDENT OF SPECIFIC SYSTEM I.E. THE RESULTS AND APPROACH ARE GENERALLY APPLICABLE. ARE MODELS VALIDATED FOR ONE GEOGRAPHIC REGION OR TIME PERIOD APPLICABLE TO ALL OTHER REGIONS OF THE SPECIES# RANGE, AND ARE THEY TEMPORALLY INVARIANT? A FUNDAMENTAL ASSUMPTION OF MOST CLIMATE CHANGE RESEARCH IS THAT DETERMINANTS OF RANGE BOUNDARIES CAN BE EXTRAPOLATED IN SPACE AND TIME; YET, OUR RESULTS SUGGEST THAT SUCH STATIONARITY OR NICHE CONSERVATISM MAY BE FALSE. CAN WE PREDICT WHEN MODELS OF SPECIES# GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTIONS WILL FAIL WHEN EXTENDED TO OTHER SPATIAL OR TEMPORAL DOMAINS? WE PREDICT THAT MODELS OF DISTRIBUTION WILL FREQUENTLY FAIL IF THE SPECIES HAS PHYSIOLOGICAL PERFORMANCE CURVES SUGGESTIVE OF SIGNIFICANT THERMAL STRESS WELL BEFORE THE SPECIES# LETHAL THERMAL LIMIT. DOES A COMBINATION OF TIME-INTEGRATED PERFORMANCE METRICS SUCH AS PRODUCTIVITY WITH THERMAL LETHAL LIMITS INCREASE THE SUCCESS OF MODELS VALIDATED THROUGH HINDCASTS AND NOWCASTS IN ONE GEOGRAPHIC REGION WHEN EXTENDED TO OTHER SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL DOMAINS? IN COLLABORATION WITH DR. CLAUDIA BENITEZ-NELSON, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, WE WILL ACCOMPLISH BIOGEOCHEMICAL OBSERVATIONS OF SINKING PARTICLE FLUXES (PARTICLE EXPORT) USING 234TH-238U DISEQUILIBRIA AND ANALYSIS OF DISSOLVED ORGANIC AND PARTICULATE INORGANIC PHOSPHORUS TO EXAMINE NUTRIENT DYNAMICS ON SAMPLES COLLECTED DURING THE 2011, 30+ DAY, RESEARCH CRUISE. THE COMPREHENSIVE DATA FROM OUR GROUP, AND OTHER ICESCAPE PIS, WILL BE USED TO DEVELOP IMPROVED MODELS OF ARCTIC OCEAN BIOGEOCHEMICAL DYNAMICS AS WELL AS TO DEVELOP REGIONALLY PARAMETERIZED OCEAN COLOR SATELLITE ALGORITHMS. ARE THE FEDERAL EFFORTS FOR COLLECTING/SHARING GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION/IMAGERY ADEQUATE/OR THE STATES/LOCAL OFFICES AND WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS? IN THIS PROJECT THE DEPARTMENT O/GEOGRAPHY GISCIENCES RESEARCH LABORATORY AT THE UNIVERSITY O/SOUTH CAROLINA (USC) PROPOSES TO CONDUCT A STATE-OF STATE IN GIS/RS USES AND ,SPATIAL DATA NEEDS FOR THE YEAR 20/1 IN ALL STATE-LEVEL EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS OFFICES, SELECTED FEDERAL AGENCIES, AND A STRATIFIED-RANDOM SAMPLING OF COUNTIES.
